TCU’s Matthew Purke To Have Shoulder Examined

Published by on April 21, 2011

There’s probably nothing more disheartening for a kid than to have his draft stock plummet just months before the draft.

TCU’s Matthew Purke, a left-handed pitcher who many expect to go in the top-10 in this year’s June Draft, will visit Dr. James Andrews because he is suffering from soreness in his pitching shoulder. Yikes.

Purke has made eight starts for the Horned Frogs this season and is 4-1 with a 1.55 ERA and has K’d 47 and walked 15 in 40.2 innings. Opponents are hitting just .192 against him this season. However, Purke’s velocity has dipped severely the last couple of starts, which has prompted the visit to Dr. Andrews.

The 21-year-old was drafted by the Texas Rangers with the 19th pick in the 2009 Draft, but decided to attend TCU when he and the Rangers couldn’t agree on a contract. If you recall, that’s when then owner, Tom Hicks, was having some financial issues. That’s what many people believed led to the deal not getting done.

We’ll keep tabs on this story as it develops.
